Last spring, Ashish Patil, head of Y films (YashRaj Films) decided to launch India’s first transgender band. He hired a choreographer, an award-winning stylist and Bollywood singing sensation Sonu Nigam. Now all he needed was trans musicians. He went looking in local trains and at traffic junctions, hot spots for trans. He managed to convince a a few of them to audition. Finally six were selected from 200 hopefuls and put through a nine-month bootcamp training. The band released their first song, Hum Hain Happy, a cover of the Pharrell Williams hit #Happy, and it was released in January to coincide with India’s Republic Day. Their second track, Sab Rab De Bande, has notched up more than three million hits on Youtube since its launch in January.
High five to the 6 Pack Band 👋
