Rare books on Indian art and catalogues of seminal exhibitions have become true collector's items. Books on Indian and Pakistani art find their way into important collections in India and around the world.
StoryLTD’s online auction of Collectible Books and Ephemera on Indian Art on May 19 in Mumbai was expected to fetch only Rs.48.
Instead it had the cash registers going ka-ching at Rs 98 lakhs.
Here are 5 collectibles that surprised even the auctioneers.
1. Marg’s sixty-four volume set (books on art) was bought by a collector for Rs 19 lakhs. The pre-sale estimate was Rs 4 – 5 lakhs. The set is a collection of well preserved issues from 1947. Several early issues are now difficult to find.
2. Important books, catalogues and rare magazines on Souza sold for Rs 12 lakhs, four times its upper estimate of Rs 3 lakhs. (Top right in the photo)
3. A set of sixteen books and magazines on Indian artists, sold at Rs 9.97 lakhs. Seven times more than what it was expected to fetch at Rs1.5 lakhs. (Left in the photo )
4. The earliest book on Raja Ravi Varma (c. 1903), and a magazine from 1911, sold at Rs 5.96 lakhs, nearly fifteen times its upper estimate of Rs 40,000.
5. Sher-Gil: 8 Books and Magazines, sold for Rs. 8.4 lakhs. Fourteen times its upper estimate of Rs. 60,000. The lot included some of the earliest magazines and catalogues featuring the artist and her work, and have never been in the market before. (Lower right in the photo)
