Kenton Lee's makes shoes that grows as the child grows |
The name of the startup sounds like a Hemmingway short story — The Shoe That Grows
What you see is what you get. The Shoe That Grows makes shoes that grow - along with your child.
It was started by Kenton Lee (left in the pic) who was living and working in Nairobi, Kenya in 2007.
All unique businesses begin with a story. So does this one: When Kenton was walking to the church, he saw a little girl in a white dress with shoes that did not fit anymore. The child had outgrown the shoes in a very short time. Something that all parents with little children can relate to.
The event ignited an idea in Kenton. Why not create a shoe that could adjust and expand to suit the growing child? That way he/she will always have a pair of shoes that fit, he thought.
And thus was born The US-based The Shoe That Grows in 2012. Based on "practical compassion" and not for profit.
They make shoes, which people can even buy in bulk (or donate money) and distribute amongst the poor where a pair of shoes can make a difference. The shoes adjust five sizes and last five years.
The shoes comes in two sizes: Small and Large. Small fits between the ages of 5 and 9 years of age
Large fits between the ages of 10 and 14 years of age. The shoe is made out of leather and compressed rubber. Easy to clean. And has no parts that breaks.
It sure is an #IdeaOfTheDay :)
